2017 Canal Days Queen Pageant Contestants

Contestant #1: Hannah Benavidez

Hannah is currently a senior, representing Delphos St. Johns High School and is the daughter of Alex and Stacey Benavidez. Hannah enjoys going to the movies and using her artistic talents. She is a seven year member of the Blue Jay band and has participated in Solo and Ensemble, receiving 12 superior ratings. Hannah has served as President of the Junior Optimist, Liturgy team Secretary, and a three year band representative. In addition, she is a member of the Mission Society, SADD, FTA, and the CRESPI Society. Hannah is very interested in government and has been selected as the Buckeye Girls State Representative from St. John’s High School. After graduation, Hannah plans to attend the Columbus College of Art and Design with her siblings.

Contestant #2: Shayna Sanchez

Shayna is the daughter of Nykky Sanchez and Eric Dengello, and is currently a senior at Delphos Jefferson High School. She enjoys spending her time dancing, cheering, and working at Chipotle. Shayna has been an active member of the Wildcat Cheer squad, FFA, and Student Council. Through her hard work in school, Shayna has been awarded an Academic Award and is on the Honor Roll. When she is able, Shayne enjoys volunteering at the Thift Store, the area Humane Society, and as a teaching assistant at the Dancer by Gina, where she has danced for 16 years. In addition to regular school work, Shayna will be attending the OSU Lima campus throughout her senior year to get a jump start on her education, as she plans to study Biology and one day become a Doctor or Physicians Assistant.

Contestant #3:  Sara Zalar

Sara is representing Delphos Jefferson’s class of 2018 and is the daughter of Dave Zalar and Amy Zalar. As a Wildcat, Sara is active in the National Honor Society, Junior Optimist, as well as Choir, Show Choir, and the school musical. Sara has competed at Nationals for both the FCCLA and the FBLA, as well as served as a Junior Class Officer. Academically, she continues to excel, as she maintains a 3.5 GPA and is on the honor roll. Sara enjoys spending time bike riding, going to the lake, and spending time outdoors during cookouts. Sara volunteers at many school and community events and at concession stands for many sporting events. Following her graduation, Sara plans to attend college in hopes to pursue a career in dentistry.

Contestant #4: Rachel Kroeger

Rachel is the daughter of Michelle Kroeger and Ron Kroeger and is entering her junior year at Delphos Jefferson High School. In school, Rachel is very active in the FFA, where she shows hogs at the fair, winning several awards. As a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, she has competed at Nationals. Rachel also participates in Jefferson’s musicals and is a member of the choir and show choir, and is a member of the Varsity Cheer Squad. Volunteering and giving back is also very important to Rachel and she is grateful to be able to do that through several of her school organizations. After graduation, she plans to attend a four year college or university to obtain a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education.

Contestant #5:  Lauren Grothaus

Lauren is the daughter of Kevin and Christina Grothaus and is active member of Delphos Jefferson’s Junior class. She is a member of the Varsity cheerleading squads for both football and basketball, placing 5th in state cheerleading competition, in addition she plays softball in the spring. Lauren is also very active in the FBLA, where she serves as Secretary, as well as choir, show choir, and the school musical. Volunteering is also very important to Lauren, so she donates her time to church activities, and as a DARE camp volunteer. She enjoys traveling with her family and spending time at the lake. In the future, Lauren plans to attend a college to study pharmacy, in hopes to obtain to pursue a career as a Pharmacist.

Contestant #6: Brooke Rice

Brooke is entering her senior year at Delphos Jefferson and is the daughter of Mark and Elaine Rice. Brooke is a member of the Varsity Soccer and track teams, as well a cheerleader for the Wildcats. She in a scholar athlete and was named as honorable mention for the Northwest Conference Soccer Teams. Brooke has been very active in dance for over 14 years at the Dancer by Gina and has received numerous cheer, dance, and gymnastic awards. In her spare time, she enjoys eating, mainly pizza, and hanging out with friends and family. She spends her time volunteering at the Delphos Thrift Shop, and as a classroom assistant at the Children’s Developmental Center of Lima. After graduation, Brooke plans to attend the Ohio State Beauty Academy in Lima to become a cosmetologist.

Contestant #7: Annette Klausing

Annette is the daughter of Charlie and Barbara Klausing and entering her senior year at Delphos St. Johns, where she is a member of the Blue Jay Soccer Team. Annette is also very active in the Junior Optimist, CRESPI Society, Art Club and Liturgy Team. She serves as team captain for the soccer team, and was nominated to the National Honor Society. Annette has been a student council representative, is an honors student and school musical for three years. During the school year, Annette tutors others and spends any free time drawing, painting, and reading. After graduation, Annette plans to attend college to obtain a degree and pursue her dream job.

Contestant #8: Lakin Stevenson

Lakin is the daughter of Gina Stevenson and Joe Burns, and is currently a junior at Delphos St. Johns. She is a member of the Track and Cross Country team, and spends her winters working as a statistician for the Blue Jay Wrestlers. Lakin enjoys dancing, as well as singing in the choir. In her free time, she enjoys riding dirt bikes, and having campfires with her family and friends. In the fall, Lakin is planning to attend Vantage Career Center. Following high school, Lakin is hoping to attend college through the ROTC program to join the Air Force. She plans on using this as a stepping stone to continue her education, studying criminal justice in order to become a probation officer.

Contestant #9: Skye Stevenson

Skye is currently a junior at Delphos St. Johns and is the daughter of Kelly and Jeremy Stevenson. Skye is a member of volleyball team, and has served as a football cheerleader, and plays softball. She is very active in the school musical and has competed in Solo and Ensemble competition through choir. Skye is a statistician for wrestling and is a member of the Girl Scouts. She enjoys taking care of both children and animals, and keeps herself busy with volunteering, school, and work. After graduation next year, Skye plans to join the Air Force and then attend college to become a Surgeon.

Contestant #10: Holly Dellinger

Holly is the daughter of Scott and Michele Dellinger and is entering her senior year at Delphos Jefferson. As a very active member of the music program, Holly enjoys choir, band, and marching band, as well as taking private piano lessons. She is also involved in the school musicals, appearing as Taylor McKessie in “High School Musical” and most recently Mrs. Potts in “Beauty and the Beast.” Holly cheers on the Wildcats as a member of the Varsity Cheerleading squads squads, and is active in the FFA program. Holly volunteers at the Trinity United Methodist Church, as a church camp counselor, and the Delphos Public Library. Holly plans to attend college after high school and study musical theater and education.
