The Canal Commission Museum is opened for the Canal Days three day weekend. Located at 241 N. Main Street and manned by all volunteers the Canal Museum will be opened 6 – 9 on Friday, 1 – 9 on Saturday and after the Grand Parade – 6 on Sunday. This hidden treasure is loaded with Delphos history and artifacts that have been put together by our local museum enthusiast. What a great place to spend the afternoon to learn about our own town heritage! [website]

The Boy Scouts of Delphos supply Canal Days with a cleanup crew for the entire weekend of the festival. Boy scouts can be seen sweeping up food and garbage on Main Street and doing lots of other community service during this time. When you see one of the scouts with a broom in his hand tell him “Thanks!” for a job well done.

The Delphos Fire Department handles a vital part of Canal Days, Sunday’s Grand Parade is one of the longest parades in the tri-county area. It takes the whole fire department and volunteers to corral the participants into a lineup on parade day. If you have a chance, give a fireman a hug for all his help during Canal Days and be sure to thank them for organizing the parade for many years!

Another event the fire department hosts is the Water Ball Contest. Area firefighters and businesses come together to participate in a wet game of who can get the ball- on-a wire across the opponents line first. Everyone has a great time while getting sprayed by water from the fire hose. If you have never watched this event, check it out at Saturday at 12:30, in front of the fire department. Bring your lawn chairs if you stay for the duration and a rain coat just in case the wind is blowing in your direction.

Our local 4H Club host a shaved ice booth during Canal Days. It’s a great fund raiser for them and they have the best shaved ice in town. Be sure to grab one or two or three. They’re so good!

Another 4H group from the Delphos area sells hamburgers under the Social Tent. It seems that everyone pitches in to make Canal Days a success. Stop by and try one of their freshly made burgers. They taste great!

The Delphos Young Farmers help operate several events during the Canal Days weekend! With activities for all ages, support our heritage and local farmers by checking out the Tractor Show, the Kiddie Tractor Pull, or their newest event, the Farm Fit Challenge. The Young Farmers events all take place on Saturday, and can be found on the Canal Parking lot behind the Main Street buildings.

Agriculture is the backbone of our community, and the success of our FFA program shows just that! Be sure to stop by the intersections of Main and Second Streets to support the FFA by playing a round on their Putt Putt Golf Course!

If you need a break from the heat step into the First Financial Banks lobby and wander through the local art and craft exhibit.  The bank is located on the corner of Main and Second and they have been showcasing area craftsmen and women for years at Canal Days. Every year the exhibit changes so make your way through the air conditioned lobby and take a closer look at the different things residents are creating.

Of all the organizations that help Canal Days the most has to be the Kiwanis Club. They have a younger active membership that supports each and every event that Delphos puts on. During Canal Days the Kiwanis handles the cooking of the famous Kiwanis Club Chicken Dinners served both Saturday and Sunday starting at 11:00 AM. Just don’t wait too long before you grab one because they just run out.

The Kiwanis also supports Canal Days while we set up and tear down for the weekend and they bring in the money wheel for the weekend for a chance to win some cash. Their support proves that there are still great people out there willing to help with anything. [website]

The Delphos Masonic Hope Lodge #214 will be giving everyone a chance at trying their luck at the dunk tank. This fun game is located on Fourth Street just across the street from the downtown lodge and behind the social tent. Festival goers can try to hit the bulls eye and send the participant into the cold, cold canal water.

The Museum of Postal History is one of 3 postal museums in the country. Artifacts from the Smithsonian in Washington DC are some of the collections the museum has in their displays. If you are a stamp enthusiast or just history buff you will enjoy what the museum has to offer. Plan to spend some time because there is a boat load of information and exhibits in our very own postal museum. The Museum will be open on Saturday from Noon to 6 pm during the Canal Days weekend. The Optimist Bingo Tent is located on Third Street in front of the Union Bank main entrance. Our local Optimist Club plays host to a weekend full of bingo games and more bingo. The group spends the weekend entertaining the bingo crowd and feeding the early morning risers. If you are 18 or older, you can play bingo for cash prizes at $.25 a game. Where else can you be entertained for that? The Pancake and Sausage Breakfast is on Saturday morning from 7:00 – 11:00 and they have the best pancakes ever and it’s all-you-can-eat!! Stop by Saturday morning to get your fill! Tickets are available from any Optimist member or at the tent during serving hours. [website]

The Trinity United Methodist Church will once again be hosting the “Taste of Trinity” Bake Sale. Take a short walk over to 211 E. Third Street to see the goodies for sale and help support one of our local churches. The sale will run from 9:00am - 3:00pm on Saturday the 17th, so be sure to stop by and remember, “Simple Simon met a Pie-Man going to the fair!” Check back closer to the date for more details!
